Youth conservatory

The Summer Youth Conservatory program offers students ages 8-18 the opportunity to develop their Theatrical, Vocal, and Dancing skills, PLUS experience the thrill of performing in a fully realised musical theatre production on the stage of the beautiful Grosvenor Theatre at the Kay Meek Centre!

The Conservatory aims to ignite young artists passions for the dramatic arts and build on their foundation skills in Drama, Dance, and Music. Every summer, through our productions, we have a fantastic time exploring far away lands. This year we will be going under the sea in The Little Mermaid Jr. with our Junior Conservatory (8-12 yrs), then around the castle, and Into The Woods Jr. with the Senior Conservatory (13-18yrs).

Just like these stories, our aspiring artists will be challenged to develop and grow. As ensemble members they will be focused on developing their individual skills and talents to benefit our troupe as a whole. They will be taught to find the character within through improvisation, and script & scene study. We will reach for the stars in dance 101, extending their hands literally and figuratively. Then learn to stand and be heard by bringing their voice up and above through vocal technique and musical exploration. This makes for very long days that require tons of focus, energy, enthusiasm, co-operation, and imagination. It is an intense and inspiring experience for the artist within your young thespian.

Kimberly Markarian - Program Director

Program Director, Kimberly Markarian, is a consummate vocal technician and dedicated music and theatre educator.  With her special gift for communicating style and technique she brings out the Artist in aspiring performers, always gently pushing them to strive and reach their potential. Over the last seventeen years Kimberly has firmly established herself as a Musical Theatre Director and Vocal Instructor on the North Shore. She has taught beginners from the young to “young at heart” and enjoys challenging them to participate in musical theatre productions, recitals, festivals, examinations, and competitions. Her students have gone on to successfully audition for University programs, in Theatre, Musical Theatre, and Classical Voice, in Canada, U.S.A, and England. Growing up in Alberta, Kimberly herself started in Children’s Theatre and was excited at the opportunity, in 2002, to collaborate with Suzanne Fulton and the West Vancouver School District in mounting their yearly Summer Musical Theatre Productions. This initial endeavour into directing and producing ignited a passion that has grown into her current position as Youth Conservatory Program Director at the Kay Meek Centre.  Since its inception in 2012,  Kimberly has had the opportunity to work with an amazing group of artists and educators which has culminated into seven successful years of productions: Footloose, Grease, Smokey Joe’s Cafe, Suessical, Aladdin, Shrek, Fame, Peter Pan, and Beauty and the Beast. She looks forward to this summer’s productions and watching all those young artists continue to grow while reaching for the stars!
