Junior Conservatory 2024 Presenting

The Little Mermaid Jr.

In a magical underwater kingdom, the beautiful young mermaid, Ariel, longs to leave her ocean home — and her fins — behind and live in the world above. But first, she’ll have to defy her father, King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, and convince the handsome Prince Eric that she’s the girl whose enchanting voice he’s been seeking.

Our first day we will begin our journey into the discovery of all aspects of a theatre production. Students will be introduced to our Creative and Production teams, and hear about the concept for our production from the Director, Choreographer, and Designers (Costumes, Sets, & Lighting). We will then begin the process of learning the Music and Choreography for The Little Mermaid Junior. Over the first two days, the creative team will work with the students as individuals, small groups, and as an ensemble, to pair each student with a unique character track. For the remainder of the three weeks we will develop and grow in our theatre skills while creating our production of The Little Mermaid Jr., all culminating in professionally mounted performances on Kay Meek’s Grosvenor Stage!

Registration

* If you are registering more than one student, please complete the full process once for each student.

Deadline for payment is June 28, 2024.

Meet the Team

Cathy Wilmot, Director

Cathy Wilmot is a faculty member of the Theatre Department at Capilano University and holds a Master of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre with an emphasis in Vocal Pedagogy from The Boston Conservatory. She is an experienced interdisciplinary artist and educator with extensive theatre training in all major dramatic forms, including voice work across speech, text analysis, vocal pedagogy, singing, movement, acting disciplines, and devised theatre.

She has performed across Canada and the U.S., including Fringe Festivals, The Revolver Festival, the International PuSh Festival, and in London, England where she performed a concert celebrating Canadian Musicals.  Favourite theatrical credits include Rosie in Mamma Mia! and Les Miserables (Arts Club), Paulette in Legally Blonde (TUTS), Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd, Pennywise in Urinetown. She is a proud member of Canadian Actor’s Equity, National Association of Teachers of Singing, and Voice and Speech Trainers Association.

Jenaya Barker, Music Director

Jenaya is a graduate of the Capilano Musical Theatre Program, and is absolutely thrilled to be joining this amazing team! Born and raised in the rural BC Interior, she is passionate about the cultivation of arts in the next generation. She wishes to encourage confidence, skill, and a love for the craft in all the people she meets and works with! She is also an accomplished vocalist, actor, songwriter, and a proud mother to many plants. Stay hydrated, stay humble

Past credits include Western Canada Theatre (Gaslight), Pacific Theatre (New Roots Festival, Christmas Presence), Chemainus Theatre (Gaslight), Applause Musicals (Do I Hear a Walt?), URP (American Idiot), First Impressions Theatre (Nunsense, Beehive), Theatre Under the Stars (Musical Theatre Summer Camp, Drowsy Chaperone), and Far From the Tree Productions (Little Women). She has also performed as a singer and songwriter all over the city and has produced and written three original albums.Spotify: @jenayabarker.

Haley Allen, Choreographer

Haley is thrilled to be joining the “Little Mermaid” Team at the Conservatory this year! With a passion for dancing and singing at a young age, she moved from her small-town of Smithers, BC, to get a degree in Musical Theatre and a Bachelor’s of Performing Arts at Capilano University in North Vancouver. When she is not performing in theatre shows, film and tv, or touring, Haley is a dance and theatre instructor at multiple studios and school locations around Vancouver, and a choreographer for productions such as this! In 2018, she started working at the Kay Meek Conservatory as a Camp Counsellor, and is thrilled to be coming back in a creative role this summer! She has had the pleasure of choreographing many musicals, including Beauty and the Beast, Chicago, Mamma Mia, Much Ado About Noting (a 1950’s Shakespeare adaptation), and now this!

Some of her favourite performing credits include: We Will Rock You and Newsies (Theatre Under the Stars), Crazy for You (RCMT), A Chorus Line and Guys and Dolls (Fighting Chance), and catch her as Mungojerrie in “Cats” all summer long at Theatre Under the Stars!! These students are truly something special: they have continued to surprise, amaze, and excite Haley with their creativity, work ethic, enthusiasm, and joy, and she can’t wait for you to see them shine!
