5 Showcases of classical virtuosity

Trio Fibonacci: The Giants of Minimalism on October 22, 2023. The repertoire for this performance features Four Seasons by Vivaldi, works by Glass, Nyman, Amar, Eno and Einaudi.

The multifaceted Nathan Chan joins the Vancouver Cello Quartet on November 19, 2023. The quartet’s seamless blend of virtuosity, passion, and ensemble playing has garnered them a dedicated following. A Kay Meek and Vancouver Chamber Music Society Co-Presentation.

The ever charismatic and wildly entertaining Ian Parker and Friends, will present two concerts this season: Bizarre Love Triangle on January 21, 2024 followed by Paris in Spring on April 14, 2024 which will be the final concert in our Resonate Series.

Percussiano 3 on March 10, 2024 features duo Elizabeth and Marcel Bergmann along with percussionist Rod Thomas Squance with their dazzling array of instruments and brilliant display of virtuosity. Percussiano 3 deliver all of the excitement of a percussion ensemble without losing the classical touch of a traditional concert.

Latin Grammy/Juno winner, singer-songwriter Alex Cuba returns to the Grosvenor Theatre with his unique blend of Cuban Soul, Latin Pop and Flamenco on September 23, 2023.

Five-time Juno award-winner and Order of Canada Recipient, Jane Bunnett and her band Maqueque - an all-female cuban jazz ensemble breathe new life into the world of jazz October 23, 2023. What started out as a project to record and mentor young brilliant Cuban female musicians, has become one of the top groups on the North American jazz scene.

The Paperboys on November 10, 2023 features fearless, freewheeling Celtic reels, traditional Mexican folk, fiddle tunes, New Orleans brass band music, classic pop song-craft, bluegrass, and even a philosophical waltz or two…this show offers something for everyone!

Martin Sexton comes to the Grosvenor January 26, 2024 with what Rolling Stone calls his “soul-marinated voice,” acoustic guitar, and a suitcase full of heartfelt songs. His incendiary live show, honest lyrics, and vocal prowess keeps fans coming back.

Celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, 2024 with Vancouver’s top female musicians in the powerhouse 18-woman ensemble Sister Jazz Orchestra, featuring the indelible Dee Daniels. In addition to her magnetic prowess on piano, Daniels adds a spellbinding four octave plus vocal range to her potent spin on every song she touches.

Blues vocalist, Ruthie Foster "...has one of the best voices in American music today and she uses it as a healing tonic for our struggling world.” - Mike Cull, Rock and Blues Muse.com. Foster closes out the Amplify Series on April 10, 2024.

5 captivating theatre productions

The Arts Club on Tour kicks off our Play Series with the hilarious comedy, The Birds and the Bees with two performances October 5 & 6, 2023. Sarah, a turkey farmer, has split up with her husband and moved in with her mom, Gail, a beekeeper. Add in Earl, the flirty neighbour, and Ben, an eager young graduate student, and you have the perfect breeding ground for unlikely attractions.

The original Canadian musical about the life of World War I fighter pilot of the same name - Billy Bishop Goes to War comes to the McEwen Theatre November 8-10, 2023. Written by John MacLachlan Gray with Eric Peterson and starring Damon Calderwood and Angus Kellett.

Calendar Girls, comes to Kay Meek for a total of 6 performances January 17-21, 2024. After Annie’s husband passes away, she and her best friend Chris resolve to raise money for the local hospital by persuading their friends to join them in posing nude for an ‘alternative calendar’.

Rounding out our Play Series are two more great musicals from Arts Club on Tour: Beneath Springhill: The Maurice Ruddick Story, February 1 & 2, 2024. Trapped. 4,000 feet underground. With no food, little air, and even less hope of survival. Remarkably and against all odds, the indomitable spirit and song of coal miner Maurice Ruddick served as a lifeline for his fellow miners over nine unimaginable days. Created by Beau Dixon, Music & lyrics by Rob Fortin & Susan Newman, Originally directed & developed by Linda Kash.

Made in Italy, March 21 & 22, 2024. A musical coming of age in 1970s Alberta. Meet Francesco Mantini, a second-generation Italian teen struggling to find his place in Jasper, Alberta. Inspired by pop culture icons Rocky Balboa and John Travolta, he reinvents himself as Frank Martin: crooner and ladies’ man.  By Farren Timoteo.

CABARET SERIES

6 INTIMATE CONCERTS IN A JAZZ CLUB SETTING

Toronto-based Soul music power house, Tanika Charles opens the 2023/24 Cabaret Series with her high energy and endearing live show October 28 & 29. 2023. Her music revels in honesty and attitude and she continues to win audience over one album, one stream, and one encore at a time.

Emerging Vancouver jazz vocalist Jeremy Wong brings his warm, friendly voice and a veteran quartet to the Cabaret November 23 & 24, 2023 for an evening of swinging standards, lyrical ballads and original vocals.

Vancouver-based string swing jazz quartet Van Django comes to the Cabaret January 11 & 12, 2024. The band’s sound is deeply rooted in 1930s gypsy jazz of Paris France.

Jazz trumpet, fiddle musician and Victoria resident, Daniel Lapp Quartet celebrates Valentine’s Day with us February 15 & 16, 2024 with selections from Chet Baker’s 1950s & 60s recordings as well as arrangements of more modern love songs

Indo-Jazz fusion band Raggaverse performs at the Cabaret April 4 & 5, 2024.The band pays homage to the two deeply historical and culturally-significant genres: classical Hindustani music and Jazz. The result is a seamless melding of both traditions into a cohesive sound that is both dynamic and explosive with immense respect, depth and beauty.

Veteran roots, blues and slide guitarist Martin Harley - described by The Guardian as “spellbinding” - closes out the Cabaret Series May 16 & 17, 2024. Exploring roots, blues and slide guitar, Harley has released eight albums to date. His recent nominations include, AMA instrumentalist of the year, Best Acoustic Guitarist, Best Acoustic Blues artist.
